Researchers adapted a quality-of-life tool specifically for prosthetic and orthotic device users
A validated satisfaction measure for O&P device users now exists. Here's what it does, how it gets used, and why the questions being asked matter more than the score.

A research team has published a version of the Limb Injury Measurement Battery for Quality of Life—known as LIMB-QOL—adapted to measure satisfaction with orthotic and prosthetic devices specifically. The new instrument is called LIMB-QOL Satisfaction with Orthosis/Prosthesis (LIMB-QOL SO/SP).
That sentence is dense with abbreviations, so it is worth slowing down: a validated, prosthetic- and orthotic-specific satisfaction measure now exists where one did not before. That is not a small thing.
What the original LIMB-QOL does
LIMB-QOL is a patient-reported outcome measure designed for people with limb injuries. It captures how limb loss or difference affects quality of life across functional, social, and psychological domains. Researchers and clinicians use it to track outcomes over time and to evaluate whether a treatment or device is working at a population level.
The problem with applying a general quality-of-life tool to an O&P context is that it was not built to ask about the device. How satisfied are you with how your prosthetic socket fits at the end of the day? Does your orthosis do what you need it to do at work? Those are specific, practical questions that a general QOL instrument might touch on only indirectly—or miss entirely.
The adaptation reported in O&P EDGE addresses that gap by developing a satisfaction subscale built for O&P users.
How these tools move through the system
Satisfaction measures are not just academic. They show up in three places that affect real care:
Research endpoints. Clinical trials and studies need a way to compare whether device A or care protocol B actually improves life for participants. The tool they choose shapes what counts as improvement. If the tool is poorly calibrated for device users, the endpoint can be off—which can affect whether a new device or approach clears a trial or not.
Coverage and authorization. Insurers and public payers sometimes require documented outcomes to justify continued coverage or authorization for a higher-function device. A validated, device-specific tool gives clinicians a recognized instrument to complete that documentation.
Clinical benchmarking. O&P practices that track outcomes across their patient population need a way to compare results. A purpose-built measure is more likely to capture what matters for device users than a tool borrowed from orthopedic surgery outcomes or general disability research.
In each of these contexts, the questions the tool asks—and how it weights the answers—carry real downstream consequences.
What this means if you are a device user
If you participate in a research study or clinical trial involving an orthosis or prosthesis, you may be asked to complete the LIMB-QOL SO/SP or a similar instrument. It is useful to know, before you fill it out, that your responses contribute to outcomes data that can shape coverage decisions, device approvals, and clinical standards—not only your individual chart.
If you have completed a satisfaction survey at an O&P appointment and were not told what it was for or where the data goes, that is a reasonable question to ask. Clinical outcome data collected by your provider is sometimes aggregated and shared with insurers, accreditation bodies, or researchers. Practices vary. Asking is not paranoia; it is how consent gets to mean something.
If you feel that a survey asked the wrong questions about your experience—that it missed what actually makes a device work or not work for your body and your life—that is also worth saying, in writing if possible. Feedback to researchers and professional associations is how instruments get revised. The version published today will not be the last version.
A note on limits
A satisfaction measure captures what you report at a point in time with a particular device in particular circumstances. It does not capture the full picture: what you had to give up to access that device, how many fittings it took, what you were not offered, or what a different device might do for you. No instrument does. Knowing what a tool measures—and what it does not—is part of knowing how much weight to put on the number it produces.
