Apple reportedly bought the company building noninvasive magnetic sensors for prosthetic control
Sonera, a UC Berkeley startup whose technology had prosthetic control among its stated applications, has reportedly been acquired by Apple. The acquisition is unannounced. Here is what the technology was, and what that typically means for clinical applications.

Sonera, a company that developed noninvasive magnetic sensors for reading neural and muscular signals, has reportedly been acquired by Apple, according to O&P EDGE. Apple has not confirmed the acquisition publicly, and financial terms have not been disclosed.
Sonera was founded in 2018 by University of California, Berkeley students. The company’s technology measures the magnetic component of neural and muscle activity rather than the electrical component that most current prosthetic control systems rely on. Myoelectric prostheses read surface electrical signals through electrodes on the residual limb. Those systems work, but they have known limitations: sweat, electrode placement, socket fit changes, and electrical interference can all degrade signal quality. Sonera’s sensors took a different measurement from the same underlying biological activity.
Magnetic field measurements from muscle and nerve activity have theoretical advantages over surface electrical measurements. They are not affected by electrical interference, and they do not require direct skin contact in the same way EMG electrodes do. The company also stated its technology could achieve neural measurement quality approaching what surgically implanted electrodes can provide, without any surgical procedure. Implanted electrodes can read individual motor units. Surface EMG cannot. Whether Sonera’s sensors would have held up under clinical testing was not established before this acquisition.
The stated applications for the technology included brain-computer interfaces, consumer wearables, accessibility devices, and health monitoring. That list covers both highly specialized clinical hardware and the kinds of sensors that end up in mass-market devices.
What this means
There is nothing to act on today. Sonera had no commercial prosthetic product. The technology was at the development stage.
Apple acquires small sensor and hardware companies regularly. Most of those acquisitions produce no press release, and Apple has not confirmed this one. When a company focused on neural and muscular sensing gets bought by a consumer electronics company, the technology can go several directions: into a clinically focused development track, into consumer wearables, or onto a shelf. Apple has not said which it intends.
The research into magnetic sensing for prosthetic control does not disappear because a company changed owners. But the direction of that research now depends on decisions being made inside a company that has said nothing publicly about what it plans to do with what it bought. If Apple’s interest is in wearables, prosthetic control development may not be the priority. If it is, the technology would come with significantly more engineering resources than a student-founded startup from 2018 would have had on its own.
The next useful signal would be an Apple announcement, a regulatory filing, or a research publication from the acquired team. Until one of those appears, “reported acquisition of a company with relevant technology” is the accurate description of where things stand.
