TSA security with a prosthesis: what to expect and what to ask for
The checkpoint is not random. TSA has documented procedures for prosthetics, clear rules on batteries and liquids, and a helpline you can call before you leave. Knowing the system ahead of time is less stressful than discovering it under fluorescent lights.

Most of what happens at airport security with a prosthesis is predictable. Your device will alarm. There will be additional screening. You have specific rights in that process. None of this has to be a surprise.
TSA publishes its procedures for passengers with prosthetics and medical devices at tsa.gov/travel/special-procedures. What follows is a practical walk through what the policy says and what it means in the actual airport.
Before you leave: TSA Cares
The TSA Cares helpline is 1-855-787-2227, available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–11 p.m. ET, and weekends 9 a.m.–8 p.m. ET. It exists specifically for travelers with disabilities or medical conditions. Call at least 72 hours before your flight.
What you get: an explanation of what to expect at your specific airport if they have that information, and — if you want it — a Passenger Support Specialist (PSS) assigned to meet you at the checkpoint on the day of travel. The PSS is a trained TSA employee who can explain each step of the screening, communicate with screening officers on your behalf, and help request accommodations like a private screening area.
Using TSA Cares is optional. Plenty of people with prosthetics move through security without it. But it is free, it requires no documentation, and the call takes less than ten minutes. If you’ve never flown with your prosthesis before, or if your prior checkpoint experience was disorganized, it is worth doing.
The TSA Notification Card
TSA provides a printable card at tsa.gov/travel/passenger-support that you can carry to communicate your medical device to a screening officer privately — without having to shout it over the noise of a checkpoint lane.
Understand what this card does and doesn’t do. It is a communication tool, not a boarding pass. It does not exempt you from screening or speed up the line. What it does: it gives you a way to indicate your condition without an uncomfortable public explanation, and it signals to the officer that you know the system, which can help set a reasonable tone for the interaction.
Print one, keep it in your travel wallet. If you never need it, the loss is nothing.
What happens at the checkpoint
Whether you go through a walkthrough metal detector or an Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) scanner — the millimeter-wave booths you step into with your arms up — your prosthesis will likely trigger additional screening. This is normal and expected. The materials in most prosthetics flag the system regardless of how straightforward they are.
Additional screening typically involves two things:
A pat-down. An officer will conduct a pat-down of the prosthesis and the surrounding area. This follows TSA’s pat-down procedures: you should be informed before it happens, and you can request a same-gender (or your stated gender preference) officer. The pat-down covers the device and often the upper and lower leg. If the prosthesis is not removable, that’s the screening method for that part of your body.
Explosive trace detection (ETD) swabbing. The officer will swab the prosthesis — and sometimes your hands — with a test strip and run it through a machine that detects trace amounts of explosive compounds. This is routine and applies to the same passengers who get pat-downs.
This process takes longer than a standard checkpoint pass. Build it into your timeline. Ten to twenty extra minutes at security is a reasonable buffer. Less during off-peak times, more on a busy Monday morning.
You do not have to remove your prosthesis
This is the part worth knowing before you need it.
TSA policy states that you should not be required to remove a prosthetic device to complete screening. If a screener asks you to remove your prosthesis, you can decline. The correct response is to request alternative screening — the pat-down and ETD swab — which is the documented alternative.
“You can decline” does not mean the situation is always simple. It may require you to be direct with a screener who doesn’t know the policy. Having the TSA Notification Card, or having called TSA Cares to arrange a PSS, gives you an additional resource in that moment.
You can request a private screening area at any point during the process. This is also documented policy. If you’d rather the pat-down happen somewhere other than the open lane, ask. The officer is supposed to accommodate this request.
Powered prosthetics and batteries: the FAA rules
If your prosthetic device is powered — a microprocessor knee, a myoelectric hand, a powered ankle — it contains a lithium-ion battery. Lithium batteries on commercial flights are subject to FAA regulations that apply regardless of what the device is.
The rules as of 2026:
- Under 100 watt-hours (Wh): Carry-on only. This covers most prosthetic device batteries. Do not put them in checked baggage.
- 100–160 Wh: Carry-on with airline approval. You need to confirm with the airline before you travel.
- Over 160 Wh: Generally not permitted on commercial passenger aircraft.
Spare batteries — including any backup battery for your prosthesis — must go in carry-on, not checked luggage, regardless of their size up to the limit. The installed battery in the device is not a spare; spares are extras you’re transporting separately.
Check the watt-hour rating on your battery’s label or in the device documentation. Your prosthetist or the device manufacturer can tell you this number if it’s not clear. “What is the watt-hour rating on my [device]” has a factual answer; find it before the airport, not at the ticket counter.
For international flights departing the US, FAA rules govern the outbound leg. For the return flight, the airline’s own dangerous goods policy and IATA regulations apply. Some international airlines have stricter limits. Confirm with the airline before booking if you’re carrying powered devices with larger battery systems.
Liquids and supplies at security
The standard TSA 3-1-1 rule applies to liquids: containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, packed in a single quart-sized clear bag. This covers liner cleaning solution, skin care products, and similar prosthetic care supplies. A 12-oz bottle goes in checked luggage, or you bring a travel-size container.
The medical necessity exception allows liquids in quantities larger than 3.4 oz for medications that are medically necessary. Tell the officer at the checkpoint before you go through. The exception applies to medications — liquid prescriptions, insulin, sterile water for CPAP machines. It does not automatically extend to prosthetic care products unless those products are prescribed medications.
Practical approach: if you use a specialized liquid that your prosthetist has prescribed or that functions as a medical supply, ask your prosthetist for documentation before you travel. If it’s off-the-shelf liner cleaner or lotion, bring it in a 3-oz container or check it.
If the screening goes wrong
If an officer asks you to remove your prosthesis when you’ve declined and they are not accepting the alternative, you can:
- Ask to speak to the supervising TSA officer at the checkpoint.
- Call TSA Cares at the airport if you arranged a PSS — they can contact your assigned specialist.
For complaints after the fact: the TSA Contact Center is 1-866-289-9673, and TSA also accepts disability-related complaints through the TSA Contact Form at tsa.gov/contact-center. The Department of Transportation’s Aviation Consumer Protection division (airconsumer.dot.gov) handles complaints about air travel accessibility more broadly.
Write down what happened before you board: time, officer badge number or description, what was asked, what you said, what happened. Memory degrades fast when you’re boarding a plane.
Flying internationally
Security protocol at airports outside the United States does not follow TSA rules. The general shape — screeners, scanners, pat-downs, swabs — is similar at most airports. The specifics are not.
What varies: what you can be asked to do, how battery rules apply on the return leg, whether private screening rooms are available, and what recourse you have if the interaction is problematic. EU airports operate under European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) guidance, which includes provisions for passengers with disabilities, but implementation varies by country and airport. For travel through specific countries, the national civil aviation authority is the right source — airport websites often publish security procedures for passengers with medical devices.
For long-haul international travel, the 20 minutes you spend confirming the destination airport’s procedures before you leave is a better investment than figuring it out on the ground tired and off your schedule.

If TSA PreCheck or Global Entry is available to you and you travel frequently, enrollment reduces (not eliminates) the checkpoint friction. Neither program eliminates the additional screening that comes with an alarming prosthetic device, but both tend to make the surrounding process less chaotic.
