How to make your next prosthetic appointment less of a mystery
A simple prep list for bringing the useful details, asking direct questions, and leaving with an actual next step.
Appointments can move fast, especially when you have spent the whole week turning “something feels off” into a sentence. A little preparation can make the conversation more specific without turning you into your own case manager.
Before you go
Bring or note:
- What you were doing when the issue showed up.
- When it started and whether it is getting better, worse, or just weirder.
- A short list of activities you want to do more comfortably.
- Photos, if your clinician has said those would help document a skin or fit concern.
- The names of supplies or components you are using now.
You do not need a flawless log. Three useful examples beat a month of trying to remember everything under fluorescent lights.
Questions that produce a next step
Try these:
- What do you think is causing this?
- What are we changing today, and what should I notice afterward?
- What is the plan if that change does not help?
- Who do I contact, and how, if I have a problem before the next appointment?
- Can you write down the timeline for the next authorization, fitting, or follow-up?
Leave with a receipt, not a vibe
Before you walk out, repeat the plan back in your own words. It feels mildly awkward. It is also the fastest way to catch “I thought you meant next week” before next month arrives.
